چکیده

Self-organizing topographic maps have found many applications as systems capable of unsupervised learning. They are based on the competitive learning algorithm applied to lowdimensional (in practice one, two or three-dimensional) structure of artificial neurons. The iterative algorithm used for competitive learning converges slowly and is computationally very intensive. In this paper direct mapping on the continuos space based on the minimization principle is used to map the high-dimensional input data to the low-dimensional target space. The problem of finding the best low-dimensional representation of the data is reduced to a minimization problem or to the solution of a system of nonlinear algebraic equations.

Landforms identification using neural network-self organizing map and SRTM data

During an 11 days mission in February 2000 the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) collected data over 80% of the Earth's land surface, for all areas between 60 degrees N and 56 degrees S latitude. Since SRTM data became available, many studies utilized them for application in topography and morphometric landscape analysis. Exploiting SRTM data for recognition and extraction of topographic ...

A Topographic Product for the Optimization of Self-Organizing Feature Maps

Optimizing the performance of self-organizing feature maps like the Kohonen map involves the choice of the output space topology. We present a topographic product which measures the preservation of neighborhood relations as a criterion to optimize the output space topology of the map with regard to the global dimensionality DA as well as to the dimensions in the individual directions. We test t...

Soft Topographic Maps for Clustering and Classifying Bacteria Using Housekeeping Genes

The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) algorithm is widely used for building topographic maps of data represented in a vectorial space, but it does not operate with dissimilarity data. Soft Topographic Map (STM) algorithm is an extension of SOM to arbitrary distance measures, and it creates a map using a set of units, organized in a rectangular lattice, defining data neighbourhood relationships. In the ...

Topographic Maps Based on Kohonen Self Organizing Maps An Empirical Approach

Two-dimensional maps are a valuable interface element for the visualization of information retrieval results or other large sets of objects. Various methods exist for the creation of these maps. This article describes a comparative evaluation of topographic maps based on “Kohonen Self Organizing Maps” (SOM). These results show that the mapping method has to be chosen very carefully and differen...

Self-organizing maps: Generalizations and new optimization techniques

We ooer three algorithms for the generation of topographic mappings to the practitioner of unsupervised data analysis. The algorithms are each based on the minimization of a cost function which is performed using an EM algorithm and de-terministic annealing. The soft topographic vector quantization algorithm (STVQ) { like the original Self-Organizing Map (SOM) { provides a tool for the creation...
